Adding Videos to Lessons

General Guidelines

  • Do not embed videos or link to them within the lesson body.
The only exception is if the video is listed as an Additional Resource.
  • If a requested video cannot be played on our site or does not meet our standards, you must find a suitable replacement.
  • Always watch the entire video, not just the intended clip. A student could access and view the whole thing.
  • Videos must meet Elephango’s content standards and should not include copyrighted material, such as music, that is likely to be taken down.
  • Select videos from reputable channels or organizations (e.g., PBS, NASA).
Older videos with many views tend to be more stable and reliable.

Add Video Using H5P Column

When to Use

Use the Column H5P to add a video in nearly all cases. It allows you to present a video alongside a transcript or other interactive H5P types.

Your Column H5P should contain at least two blocks.

  1. Block 1: The video itself (using the Video H5P).
  2. Block 2: The transcript (using the Text H5P).

You may also include additional blocks for interactions like questions or summaries if needed.

Transcript Tip: Use ChatGPT to help generate a clean transcript from the video. Do not include time stamps. Make sure the transcript reads smoothly and clearly.

Video Sources

  • Use a direct video file or a video URL that is allowed for educational reuse.
  • Ensure that the video is either:
    • An original creation,
    • In the public domain, or
    • Clearly allowed for reuse (e.g., Creative Commons or confirmed Terms of Service).

Check copyright before uploading or embedding any video.

Citing the Video

All videos must be cited unless they are original (created by you or the developer).

If the video includes copyrighted material (e.g., a tutorial of a tool), cite the original source.

If the video was altered (e.g., trimmed or made interactive), add a note in the citation.

Advanced Use: Interactive Video or Slide Decks

In some cases, you may need to:

All of these are supported and can be added to your Column H5P or embedded as standalone H5Ps in the lesson.
